John Shrapnel, né le 27 avril 1942, est un acteur anglais.

 

Enfance

John est né à Birmingham. Son père était un journaliste et écrivain. Il a étudié dans une école privée pour garçons de Londres, où il a commencé le théâtre, puis au St Catharine's College de Cambridge.

 

Carrière

Il débute sa carrière d'acteur par des apparitions à la télévision dans les années 1960, auxquelles il ajoute bientôt le cinéma. Il participe en 1971 à la mini-série Elizabeth R, puis en 1974 à Good girl. Il tient son premier rôle principal à la télévision quatre ans plus tard, dans la série Edward & Mrs. Simpson.

Les années 1980 sont opulentes : il enchaine les rôles principaux, en commençant en 1982 par la série The Woman in White et le téléfilm King Lear. Il enchaine l'année suivante avec My Cousin Rachel, puis Sorrell and Son. Il joue aussi Creon dans The Theban Plays by Sophocles, et Lord Steyne dans Vanity Fair. Il joue enfin en 1989 dans Blackeyes.

Les années 1990 sont du même rythme : il participe entre 1990 et 1992 à Centrepoint, G.B.H., Selling Hitler et Between the Lines. Après un temps d'apparitions, il est engagé en 1996 dans la série Bodyguards, dans laquelle il joue deux ans. Il participe en 2000 à trois épisodes du 10ème royaume.

En 2004, John est le narrateur de I Am Not an Animal. En 2006, il joue Pompée dans la mini-série historique Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire. L'année suivante, il participe au film Elizabeth - L'âge d'or. En 2008, il retrouve des roles principaux à la télévision dans The Palace et Apparitions. Il joue dans la pièce de théâtre Phèdre en 2009. En parallèle, il développe une carrière voxographique autant au cinéma qu'à la télévision.

En 2012, il joue dans un épisode de la saison 5 de Merlin. En 2013, il participe à une adaptation de McBeth. En 2015, c'est au tour d'Hamlet et du Conte d'Hiver. Il joue en 2017 dans le téléfilm King Charles III.

 

Vie privée

Il est marié depuis 1975. Il a trois enfants. C'est le beau-fils de Deborah Kerr.
